January 2016 ~ Message From Our Minister

Greetings in Christ ~

The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing… (Zephaniah 3:17)

On December 26th we are often heard saying that the Christmas season is behind us. According to the church’s liturgical calendar, that statement is incorrect. It is the Advent Season that is behind us – the time of preparing to celebrate the coming of the Savior. The Christmas season is “a season of praise and thanksgiving for the incarnation of God in Jesus Christ, which begins with Christmas Eve or Christmas Day and continues through the Day of Epiphany. The name Christmas comes from the season’s first service, the Christ Mass. Epiphany comes from the Greek word epiphania which means ‘manifestation’.” (United Methodist Book of Worship)

We have had our time of preparation. Now it is time to live into that for which we have prepared, being participants in the manifestation of God in our midst. In a recent sermon I mentioned how the Old Testament prophets often began their messages with warnings to a world gone awry. We can easily see the signs of the times; the world needs a Savior. The prophets concluded their message with an invitation to receive God’s amazing grace. Now is the time to offer praise and thanksgiving for the gifts of grace and salvation in Jesus Christ! Now is the time to turn things around and make a new way in the wilderness!

Jesus is no longer the infant in the manger, he is our risen Savior, the impetus of the faith, hope, joy and love we proclaimed during Advent. God loved us so much he sent his only begotten Son so that all may be saved; that’s a done deal. As believers in Christ and members of Union United Methodist Church, what will we do to celebrate and share that Good News in the year of our Lord 2016? Will we rejoice in our salvation? Will we be renewed in God’s love? Will we be the hands and feet of Jesus? Will we continue to have an impact on the world around us?

We are at a critical juncture in our ministry here at UUMC, with a narrowing window of opportunity to turn things around and be the witnesses Jesus calls us to be. Are you prepared to make a difference – to be Christmas people? Will God have cause to exult over us with loud singing? These are important questions to contemplate in prayer and then whole-heartedly respond to as we begin a new Christmas season. May God bless you all; may God bless our church in 2016.

     Your Fellow Servant in Christ,
