June 2017 Newsletter Article from Pastor Carol Stufflebeam

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The book of Jonah which is found in the Old Testament is a story about a man who ran from God because he didn’t want to do what God had asked of him. As we reflect upon Jonah’s reaction to God, we recognize that Jonah didn’t think that one through. We can run from God, but the reality is God is with us even when we run. In the process of unwrapping Jonah’s response to God we recognize there have been times that we have all been on the run. Yes, Christians have been known to run from God. We don’t often think about our actions as such…however anytime we avoid God’s movement in our lives and choose our own path, we are on the run. God calls each of us to respond to the movement of the Holy Spirit and to obedience to His will. The key to obedience and knowing God’s will is through spending time with God…seeking Him rather than going in the opposite direction as Jonah did. The amazing thing is that God never gives up on us, so neither should we. No matter what has or has not transpired in your life, God is faithful.

In the letter to the Hebrews in the eleventh chapter, the author of this New Testament book addresses some of the difficulties the people have experienced. He encourages them and us with these words. “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:1-2a, NRSV).”

Beginning Saturday/Sunday, June 17-18, I will begin a preaching series on the Book of Jonah. Join us to hear more about how God continued to pursue and teach Jonah about His love and grace…a grace that sets each of us free from sin and death. It is the greatest gift we have ever received; my prayer is that you have opened that gift with your heart and that you have peace.

Blessings,

  Pastor Carol
