October 2017 Newsletter Article from Pastor Carol Stufflebeam

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Yesterday as I was out and about I noticed for the first time this fall that the leaves are beginning to turn. I even saw one tree that was already in its’ entirety, a beautiful yellow, it was magnificent. Fall is here. I know that in just a short time I will need to pull everything out of the garden so that the soil will be ready to be tilled next spring. I anticipate that it will take time to get the job done because some of the plants have gotten quite large and out of control. I imagine that some of the roots go deep and will take some muscle to get them out. As we get ready for winter, there are things that we each need to do to be prepared; we need to ready our homes, our cars, our clothes, and even our mindset as we brace for the cold winter weather that lays ahead. We will witness a lot of change in the coming months. Most of us accept these changes and even look forward to some of them. Change is a part of life, but many of us have a difficult time changing. Yet for our well-being it is good to do some self-reflection. It is important to take a look at the deep seated habits that are a part of our lives? Are there things we need to ask God to forgive? When we ask God to forgive us, do we make an about face and sin no more in that area?     In the Gospel of Luke 19:1-10 we read the familiar story of Zacchaeus. Zacchaeus was a rich tax collector who made his wealth at the expense of other people. When he met Jesus, Jesus informed Zacchaeus that He was going to his house that day. In spite of how Zacchaeus had lived his life, Jesus still loved him. Zacchaeus was so moved by Jesus’ grace that he changed. He made an about face and paid back everyone he had taken money from and then some.

Repentance means we turn away from that sin, God calls for an inner change of heart. It is important to remember who we are in Christ and more important, who God is. God is forever faithful and will show us not only the things we need to change; He will give us the strength to do it. God’s grace is abundant and God will see you through.
