September Newsletter ~ Message from Pastor Tim Woodard
So when they had come together, they asked him, ‘Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He replied, ‘It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’  Acts 1:6-8

It is by the power of the Holy Spirit that you and I are enabled to be witnesses to the events  which happened two thousand years ago. One criterion for being a witness is that you must have “seen” something occur. It is the work of the Holy Spirit and the presence of Christ Jesus in our lives, our hearts, and in Word and Sacrament that makes the past acts of God contemporary to us. Even though we did not witness events such as the Crucifixion and Resurrection with our own eyes, we can still claim to be true witnesses. We can experience the sacrifice and triumph of Jesus Christ just as surely as if we had been there. It’s difficult for anyone to explain exactly how God accomplishes this, but we can see the work of God’s Spirit happening again and again as thousands upon thousands of people in every generation come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

A second criterion for being a witness is a willingness to testify to what we know. It was the manifestation of the Spirit at Pentecost that empowered the first disciples to bear witness to Jesus’ mighty acts of salvation to and often hostile world. It is the very same Power that enables you and I to witness to our faith today.

Have you ever noticed that the Book of Acts never really ends? We are left wondering what happened to Paul and the other followers of Jesus. The Book of Acts ends as a cliffhanger, enticing us to find out what happens next. The Book of Acts has no defined ending because the saga is ongoing. The collection of eyewitness testimonies we have in our Bible, known as the Book of Acts, leaves off at chapter 28. Welcome to chapter 2016! Can I get a witness?

        Peace in Christ,

        Pastor Tim
